Financial institution license
The legal environment of the Republic of Estonia provides the businessmen with opportunity to render their clients with certain financial and investment services, as well as to offer ancillary services on the basis of the state license of the financial institution, (FFA-license).
Financial institution license (financial license) in Estonia
- Regulator: Office for money laundering prevention (Financial Intelligence Unit, FIU)
- Legal framework: Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing Prevention Act
- Period of consideration for the application: up to 30 working days
The license of financial institution implies the possibility of providing the simplest financial and investment services, such as currency exchange, financial consulting, crowdfunding and investment collection, lending to business, etc.
When filing of an application for the obtaining of a financial license, it is necessary to select one or more directions of activity from the list provided below, as well as to provide the regulator with the accompanying documentation indicated in the legislation, for each selected activity.
On the basis of a financial license it is possible to render the following services:
- Currency exchange
- Provision of advice to clients
- Borrowing and lending operations
- Leasing transactions
- Money broking
- Guarantees and commitments
- Savings and loan association
NB! Before starting a commercial activity, it is necessary to make sure that the company’s activities do not fall under the control of the Financial Supervision Authority, and there is no need to obtain a license or permit for activities, issued by the above-mentioned authority in the context of the Law on credit institutions, the Law on securities market and other legislation of the Republic of Estonia, directly related to finance and investments.
